Suggested foundation types

The average weight of a 20 ft x 8 ft completed garden room is approximately 4 metric tonnes 4000 kgs. So a suitable foundation is essential to prevent sinkage and to increase the protection of the exposed steel sub-structure . Location and budget will no doubt dictate which option you go for but needless to say a good level foundation is very important.

Container conversion gravel base

Level compacted gravel

The bare minimum base for your container would be a compacted gravel base perhaps with some plastic reinforcing grids.

Garden room wood sleeper base

Timber sleepers

Timber sleepers, whether reclaimed or new, make for an easy option but will, after many years, need replacing.

Garden office concrete sleeper base

Concrete sleepers

Obviously longer lasting than the wooden variety but much harder to handle.

Garden studio concrete pier foundation

Concrete piers

Simple concrete piers make an excellent choice you can purchase preformed tubes to fill with concrete or make the forms yourself from plywood. Concrete filled steel drums are also an excellent choice.

Garden office concrete foundation

Solid reinforced concrete foundation

Obviously a very permanent option which offers excellent strength and durability. More costly than the previous options.

Container room solid foundation

Solid reinforced concrete base

Again this provides a very permanent & solid foundation. Again a more expensive option.
